PAL Basketball Information Letter

The Scotch Plains–Fanwood Police Athletic League Basketball Program is sponsored by the SPF-PAL, and hosts competitive travel basketball teams for boys in grades 4th through 8th and girls in grades 5th through 8th who reside in Scotch Plains or Fanwood.

The objectives of the program are to develop skills, sportsmanship, teamwork and discipline. The basic philosophy is to foster a positive, supportive atmosphere so that every player can have a great basketball experience. We are committed to teaching and instilling fundamental skills and preparing all players to play at the next level of the game.

Teams will be comprised of 10-12 players.  Initially there will be between 2-3 practices per week taking place at Park and Terrill Middle Schools or Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School.  Games will begin in December and run through March, each team will play between 15-25 games.  Games can be played any day of the week Monday – Sunday.  Each team will play away and home games. Travel to away games is usually around a ½ hour ride.  Once games begin practices will be reduced to 1 or 2 times per week.  Each team can expect to play between 1-2 games per week.

The cost to participate will be approximately $250-$275 for the season plus a $55 fee for a uniform.  The final cost will be determined once the teams are selected.  The uniform fee is separate from the registration fee. If your child participated last season and he has his uniform, it will not be necessary to purchase another one if it still fits.

Should your child choose to participate in the PAL Basketball Program his participation on another travel team will most definitely present conflicts and certain leagues will not allow players to play on multiple teams.  Unfortunately all players that tryout are not guaranteed a spot on the team and some teams may have to cut some players.  This is no way any indication of your child’s ability to play the game of basketball. We encourage any player who does not make a PAL travel team to sign up for Scotch Plains Recreation in house program.

Teams will be posted on the PAL Website located at http://www.spfpal.com/ on Sunday, October 27th by 9pm.  If your child makes the team, you will have 24hrs to accept the position by registering and paying online at the http://www.spfpal.com/ website.  You will have to create an account and the register for the program (team) that your son made (similar to soccer and baseball).  Please also notify your coach of your intent to play on the team.  If your son has made a team and accepted the slot then there will be a PARENTS MEETING that is TENATIVELY SCHEDULED for Wednesday, October 30th at 7:30 pm at Terrill Middle School cafeteria.  At the meeting we will have a brief discussion on the upcoming season and answer any questions.  NEW this year – UNIFORMS will be ordered online – however, if you are wondering on sizes there will be a couple samples on site and you can let you coach know if you need to change your order to a different size.

Practices will begin on or around November 1st.
